That's sad news - spent many hours on Seti. Is looking its age though. I didn't know this 'The telescope is also an extremely powerful planetary radar, which is key for studying asteroids that cross Earth’s orbit.' from the 2nd article you linked. Good spot not seen that news anywhere.

I posted a similar article earlier this morning taken from the MSNews website which I have now deleted. Seti was what started me off on distributed computing so for me, and I'm sure for many thousands of others, it really is a very sad ending to what more than likely gave birth to the myriad of other projects that followed. Note: Have deleted my duplicate post re: the Aricebo telescope.

I think other projects I have run are more worthwhile and of more benefit but Seti was the always the one.

After wondering what would happen after the sad demise of the Aricebo telescope I found this? Seems not all in the search of the heavens for ET and other projects similar in nature to the Aricebo project have been lost. After several years of testing, the new kid on the block went active in January this year. FAST's nickname is Tianyan, which means "Eye of the Sky" or "Eye of Heaven." --> phys.org/news/2020-01-china-meter-fast-radio-telescope.html

It is such sad news, and a very sad end to an amazing telescope. Seti started me down this path and was the only project I took part in for years - without Arecibo, distributed computing wouldn't exist in the form it is today. I always thought that it was carved into the mountain, and plastered smooth. But those photos show that it was quite flimsy, and just a raised platform off the floor of the forest.

SETI@home got me started a long time ago....I think I was 11 at the time.
Sad news indeed; perhaps a replacement can be built. It might end up being cheaper that way. Don't give up hope.

A truly sad day indeed. It may be gone but hopefully, never to be forgotten. :-((
Given my previous post, should luck have anything to do with it, perhaps, like the phoenix it could rise from the ashes?
